Q1. I just need to renew my B1/B2 visa. Am I in the clear?

Not necessarily. The U.S. government has recently changed rules requiring almost all renewal applicants to go to a visa interview. They made this change because they want to re-asses each applicant at the interview.

Q2. What should I list as my purpose of travel—tourism or state World Cup?
There isn’t a simple correct answer! You need to bring a comprehensive and truthful approach to filling out the DS-160 to avoid problems at your interview. Beyond this, be ready to explain your plans coherently at the interview.
Q3. How much time do I have if I get a refusal?
It will differ depending on your Embassy or Consulate. Around the world, visa slots are becoming harder to get.
Q4. Are Visa Officers going to be stricter on World Cup applicants?
In general, refusal rates for tourist visa applicants have increased over the last couple of years. There is a high burden for overcoming 214b at your interview that will differ depending on your individual case and factors in your home country.
Q5. My passport has expired, but the U.S. visa in it is still valid. Do I need to apply for a new visa?

If your visa is still valid you can travel to the United States, but you must take both passports (old and new). Both passports must indicate the same nationality, and your name must be identical. Please note: A valid visa is not guarantee of entry into the United States. Final determination of entry is at the sole discretion of the CBP Officer reviewing the documentation.

Q6. Can my American friends, relatives or business partners assist in facilitating the issuance of a U.S. visa on my behalf?

Visa applicants must qualify for the visa according to their own circumstances, not because of recommendations or sponsorship from an American relative, business associate, or other sponsoring organization.

Q7. Can I buy an airline ticket before visa issuance?

You should not buy an airline ticket before visa issuance. Please do not make any firm plan until you receive your visa.

Q8. If my B1/B2 visa is denied, can I request a refund?

No. Visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You can schedule your visa interview within one year of your payment.

Q9. There are no appointments available before the date I need to travel. What should I do?

If you need to travel soon and no appointments are available, you may request an expedited appointment. Before you request an appointment, please book the earliest available appointment in the system.
